Privacy policy

We follow the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020. This page explains what information SmartCompare collects, why, and what you can do about it. You don’t need an account to use the site, and we never ask for your name, email or phone number.

What we collect

• Usage analytics: we use Google Analytics to see which pages are read, which tools and filters are used, which deals are clicked and how people find the site. It sets cookies and collects usage information such as pages visited, approximate location and device type. We use this only in aggregate, to improve the site.
• Tool answers: plan finder and calculator answers (like how much data you use or your current bill) are worked out in your browser. We record which answers are chosen, as part of the analytics above, so we can improve the tools.
• Your comparison list: plans you add to “Compare” are saved in your own browser, not on our servers. Clearing your browser data removes them.
• Server logs: like any website, our hosting provider briefly keeps technical logs (such as IP address, browser type and pages requested) to keep the site secure and working.
• Error reports: if a page breaks or can’t be found, we record the error and the page address so we can fix it. These reports don’t include anything that identifies you.

Cookies

Google Analytics sets cookies to tell visits apart. We don’t use advertising cookies. You can block analytics cookies in your browser settings, or with Google’s opt-out add-on.

Where it’s stored

Our hosting, analytics and error-reporting providers may store this information on servers outside New Zealand. We only use providers that protect it to a standard comparable to New Zealand law. We don’t sell or share it with anyone else.

Links to providers

When you click through to a provider, the link tells them you came from SmartCompare, so any commission can be credited. We don’t pass on anything else about you. Once you’re on their website, their privacy policy applies.

Your rights

You can ask to see or correct any personal information we hold about you by emailing hello@smartcompare.co.nz. If you’re not happy with how we handle a privacy concern, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.

If we change how we handle information, we’ll update this page. Last updated 12 October 2026.
