Before you buy
Check your phone is unlocked
A NZ SIM or eSIM only works if your phone isn’t locked to your home carrier. Spark notes you can’t install a travel eSIM on a network-locked phone.
eSIM: install before you fly
Most eSIMs can be installed at home and switched on when you land. Keep your home SIM in the phone for bank texts, but turn off roaming on it so you don’t get charged.
Physical SIM: buy at the airport
One NZ, Spark and 2degrees all sell SIMs at or near major airports, and in their stores. Spark’s data-only packs are eSIM only.
Emergency calls
New Zealand’s emergency number is 111. One NZ warns that some phones bought outside NZ may not be able to call 111, so check before you travel somewhere remote.
Staying longer than three months?
Travel packs are built for short stays. For longer, a normal NZ prepay plan is usually cheaper: compare them in our prepay plans and best plans this month.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best SIM card for tourists in New Zealand?
It depends on how long you're staying and whether you need a NZ number. For a one-week trip with about 1GB a day, the cheapest option we list is 2degrees Unlimited Travel SIM, 7 days (Unlimited, 7 days) for NZ$35. If you also want to make calls, it's 2degrees Unlimited Travel SIM, 7 days (Unlimited, 7 days) for NZ$35.
What is the cheapest NZ travel SIM?
The lowest-priced pack we list is Saily 1GB, 7 days (1GB total, 7 days) for US$3.99, about NZ$7.11. Check it lasts for your whole trip and has enough data.
Can I get unlimited data in New Zealand as a tourist?
Yes. 2degrees' Unlimited Travel SIM is priced by the number of days, and Airalo and Holafly sell unlimited data eSIMs. For two weeks, the cheapest unlimited option is 2degrees Unlimited Travel SIM, 14 days (Unlimited, 14 days) for NZ$60.
Should I get an eSIM or a physical SIM for New Zealand?
An eSIM can be installed before you fly, so you are connected when you land, and you keep your home SIM in the phone. You need an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone. A physical SIM works in any unlocked phone and can be bought at airport stores when you arrive.
Do international eSIMs give me a New Zealand phone number?
No. The Airalo, Saily and Holafly eSIMs we list are data only, so you use WhatsApp or other apps to call. One NZ, Spark and 2degrees travel SIMs include a NZ number with calls and texts (except Spark’s data-only packs).
What is the best SIM for a 3-month stay in NZ?
For 90 days with calls and about 1GB a day, the cheapest pack we list is One NZ Travel SIM $99 (100GB total, 90 days) for NZ$99. If you're staying longer, a regular prepay plan may be better value: see our prepay plan comparison.
