How to switch mobile provider and keep your number
Switching mobile provider in New Zealand is easier than most people think. You can keep your number, the new provider does most of the work, and you’re usually up and running the same day.
1. Check what you’re signed up to
- Pay monthly: check if you’re on a fixed term or still paying off a phone. Leaving early can mean an early termination fee or paying off the rest of the handset.
- Prepay: no contract, but unused credit and data usually disappear when you move. Use it up first if you can.
2. Find a better plan
Check how much data you actually use (Settings › Mobile Data on iPhone, or Settings › Network & internet › Data usage on Android). Then compare plans that cover it. Our data calculator can help if you’re not sure.
3. Make sure your phone will work
Most phones sold in NZ are unlocked, but it’s worth checking if you bought yours on a plan. If you’re moving to an eSIM plan, check your phone supports eSIM.
4. Sign up and ask to keep your number
When you join your new provider, choose to transfer (or “port”) your existing number. You’ll need details of your current account, such as your account number for pay monthly, or your number and SIM details for prepay. Don’t cancel your old plan first, because that can release your number.
5. Pop in the new SIM
Once the transfer is complete, your old service stops and the new one starts. Insert the new SIM or activate the eSIM, restart your phone, and you’re done. Pay monthly customers get a final bill from the old provider.
Switching to a cheaper brand on the same network
The easiest saving is often a budget brand that uses the same network you’re on now, because your coverage stays the same. Of the 16 providers we compare, 13 are virtual providers. By network: One NZ (5), Spark (5), 2degrees (5), and Zeronet doesn't say. See which brand uses which network.

Switching checklist
- Use up prepay credit and data before you move, as it usually doesn’t transfer
- Turn off auto top-up or direct debit with your old provider once the switch is done
- Keep your old SIM until your number has moved across
- Check your final bill if you were on pay monthly
- If you’re paying off a phone, check what’s left to pay before you leave
